The Arena is now Open!

Postby Jhazkrit » Wed Aug 07, 2013 9:59 am

The sun beats down upon the sands of the Northern Desert. The native creeper population stirs at the touch of a light breeze and a faint clanging is heard in the air. One curious creeper, Jimmy, approaches the sounds to investigate.
As he draws closer, he starts hearing a rhythmic "twang" and "thwip" as well. He walks past the pyramid fortress that dominates the landscape and sees a new building near it. It is a squat, round thing with a tunnel on one side and a stairwell on another. The clanging and "twangs" are getting louder so Jimmy knows that he is getting near the disturbance.
He decides to climb the stairs and marvels at what he sees: An arena, filled with all sorts of monsters, such as zombies and skeletons and even a few of the enigmatic zombie pigmen. Even as Jimmy watches, one of the skeletons is cleaved in two by a swordsman, while behind him, another warrior is steadily shooting arrows into the oncoming horde. The two were the source of the noises that drew Jimmy.
He sat up in the stands, amazed at the skill and dexterity of the warriors as they dispatched their foes with ease. As the last of the undead fell, a voice boomed out to the warriors: "Well done! Round 4 is complete. The Final Round will begin shortly." Startled, Jimmy stared at a third figure. This one was no warrior, instead he was the controller, the one responsible for the arena's operation inside his control room.
The warriors rested themselves as best they could in the short time they had when the next round began. This round, there were far more zombie pigmen, along with a half dozen blazes and even a few witches in the back. With their armor nearly broken, and the arrows just about depleted, the odds were not in their favor. The warriors stared death in the face, glanced back at each other, laughed at the cruel end that surely awaited them, and charged in...

The arena is a mob battle area where you pit your skills against some of the lands toughest creatures. It is located in the desert north of spawn, near the pyramid. You can battle, either with a group or solo, against mobs of increasing difficulty in either 5 or 10 round match to the death.
The rules are simple: You can bring a sword, armor and food. Nothing more. No potions or bows or arrows. The armor and sword can be of any material but it cannot be enchanted. You keep the loot of the enemies you kill. If you get a bow and arrows from a skeleton or some potions from a witch, you can use those.
So far, Vander, Zhro and I are the only ones who can operate the arena's controls, so if we're on, just ask us for a try. If you go the full 5 rounds without dying, you may get a prize. If you go the full 10 rounds without dying, you may get a better one. If you die in the arena, don't ask for your stuff or levels back. Its a risk you take when you enter. You have unlimited tries, so if you die, you can just walk back and continue the round. Go ahead and take that opportunity to re-arm yourself if you want. I hope you all enjoy this feature!

Some Screenshots from Ajwuzere and Supert089's try at the arena. They were the "warriors" in the above story and they did not survive:

The pigmen are among the most powerful of the mobs you face in the Arena, easily cutting down even diamond plated Champions. They steal the armor of fallen foes and kill without mercy. With a witch in the back ranks, and a blaze or two providing literal "Fire Support," the unprepared are swiftly eviscerated.

How will you fare?

Today, the arena had our first 100%, full 10 round winner! Zayk435 soloed all 10 rounds of the arena without dying. As a bonus, he was allowed to fight against two bosses, the terror known as Deathwing for Round 11 and then against a wither for Round 12. He didn't succeed the first time against the wither but he eventually triumphed over the 3-headed fiend. For winning the first 5 rounds, he was able to choose one of the arena mascots to keep as a pet. For going the full 10, he won Deathwhinny: The Shrill; a horse to call his own. Other people will be able to choose from similar prizes if they go the distance, so sharpen your swords and polish your armor and bathe the arena in the blood of your enemies, if you have the courage to do so.

This is actually Zayk in this picture, he had a Derpy Vander skin on for this fight. According to Zayk himself, he was "Dressing as my hero."

All of the moderators were viewing this fight as invisible, immortal entities to see how Zayk would do.

Re: The Arena is now more deadly!

Little Jimmy the Creeper is awestruck. He's been coming to the arena for months now and no one has performed this well before. The man stands alone against the oncoming horde of zombie pigmen and cuts them down with a fury usually reserved for F-5 tornados. The diamond sword whirls in his hand and slices a nearby pigman in half whilst another is simultaneously kicked across the room by a well-timed roundhouse kick. Jimmy cheers on as the warrior obliterates the remaining pigmen, many of whom are clawing at the walls, trying to escape the inevitable re-death that they face. The Arena Overlord is just as startled by the warrior's skill.
"Perhaps this one will be the one to challenge my beast," the Overlord thought. "Perhaps this one will be able to truly entertain me!" And so, with the last pigman neatly diced up into spare fish bait, the Overlord burst into hearty laughter and said, "Well done! You've beaten my arena! Well, most of it. There's but one stage left, and it is only for the very best of fighters. It will be the most dangerous by far. Death is almost a certainty if you proceed. But," the Overlord continued, "Overcome this final challenge and you will be very richly rewarded." The warrior considered his options: either he could stop now, and take the prizes that he had already won or, he could continue and win more, but with a drastically lowered survival chance. To the warrior, there was no conflict of interest. He lived for battle, and this beast the Overlord spoke of might very well be the greatest challenge anyone had ever faced. He looked up at the Overlord and nodded. The Overlord smiled wickedly and said, "I was hoping you were fool enough to try this," and pulled a few levers. Suddenly the arena floor was ripped away and the warrior found himself falling into a dark abyss. Little Jimmy the Creeper, stunned by this sudden change, could only look on as the warrior fell into the void. He leaned forward to see where the warrior would land, and what he saw terrified him to no end.

The Arena has been a success! People use it semi-often and seemed to have welcomed it into their lives as something to do while bored. Its been doing so well that I decided to add a second room to it. Only those who make it the full 10 rounds without dying have a chance to fight in this newer, darker arena. There they will fight much more powerful creatures and even a certain non-draconic boss mob! The rewards for this room will be precious minerals. Diamonds, emeralds, gold, lapis, iron and redstone are all possible rewards! With this new room added, I hope to see more people attempting the Arena challenge.

And for the record, this is what Little Jimmy the Creeper saw:
